Project phases & development
PHASE 1
This phase of our Project is to imminently start providing services to the ALS community by helping pALS and their families come to Colombia.
Our funding target for Phase I is $500,000 which will provide adequate funding for the first year’s operational expense. To accomplish this, we plan to rent a 3-5 acre piece of land that has not been used as farmland and construct several prefabricated wheelchair accessible homes to house 20-30 pALS and cALS at a time.
Considering an average stay of 2-3 months per pALS translates into the Center helping several hundred pALS and cALS during the start-up phase. We can have Phase I operational 2 months after receipt of adequate donations.
PHASE II
Consists of the purchase of a much larger piece of land of approximately 20-30 acres and construct permanent structures for the ALS Wellness Center.
Consists of the purchase of a much larger piece of land of approximately 20-30 acres and construct permanent structures for the ALS Wellness Center.Â
On our visit to Colombia we found that we could purchase a 30-50 acre parcel of land for around $1.3-$1.5 million.Â
Estimated cost for all construction, equipment and furnishings is $1.7-2.5 million and time to completion is expected to be 7-9 months.
PHASE III
Includes growing organic foods for our own consumption and sale of the surplus to the surrounding community at weekly farmers markets.
Our ties to the indigenous communities also include a plan to have them grow plants with beneficial properties to make herbal teas, tinctures, essential oils and other products for own use and sale to the public.
Our product development and marketing strategy is geared towards having the ALS Wellness Center to be self-funded and not be dependent on the constant flow of donations. Estimated cost of expansion $1 million USD.
Sample building design
The following are sample designs of 1,615 square foot (150 square meter) prefabricated houses that can be purchased locally, manufactured and fully completed within 30-60 days of down payment. The floor plans are already commissioned with a local architect and we are designing them to have 4-6 bedrooms in a larger format, all with their own bathroom and an area for the caregivers work station.
The structural foundation is only required for the load bearing walls, and the prefab elements are put into place and finishes can be customized.
Our cost for a fully finished house is ~$30,000-$35,000 depending on final size, window and door types, bathroom fixtures and other interior customization.
